Handsemmel

Kaisersemmel knotted by hand

Where it comes fromVienna's own

Early in the 1600s country bakers sold finer Semmeln in the city, and Viennese bakers were drawn by lot to compete. From 1772 every city baker could bake them; the name Kaisersemmel came in the early 1800s.

At Szihn

Proved slowly on the bakery's own wheat poolish, a long-rested starter, and baked fresh each morning, for breakfast with butter.

From Szihn's own menu and pages, as we read them in October 2026.
